The Republicans' Senate nominee in Colorado, that's who:
Direct election of Senators may seem like a bit of a strange topic to be discussing in a Senate election, particularly one in the 21st century. Yet given Republican Ken Buck's radically extreme position on the subject -- splicing up the Constitution to remove Americans' right to vote for United States Senators -- it's understandable why the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee would be running ads on the topic.
More broadly, this ad fits in with the overarching narrative that Democrats are seeking to establish ahead of the 2010 midterms: major elements of the Republican Party have been taken over by fringe elements. The establishment media seems to be finally understanding this story, notably with regards to Republicans' disregard for the Constitution, but it is evident elsewhere (think the Senate races in Nevada and Kentucky, as well). And when it comes down to it, as unhappy as voters may be with Democratic incumbents, it's yet unclear that they would go so far as to vote for far right Republican candidates who would seek to carve up the Constitution to forward their ideological agenda (which apparently includes disenfranchising the right to vote for Senators).
