Gov. Joe Manchin leads Morgantown businessman John Raese by 22 percentage points, according to the MindField Poll conducted by R.L. Repass & Partners, Inc. and released today. Manchin and Raese are seeking the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Robert C. Byrd.Caveats here abound: the survey was conducted over the internet, and the sample size is so small to push the poll's margin of error up to plus or minus 6 percentage points. That said, Democrat Joe Manchin's lead is statistically significant in this poll, and further the data here doesn't look all that different from last month's Rasmussen Reports poll on the race, which also gave Manchin a sizable lead. So while the Democrats do have to worry about a number of their red state Senate seats this fall, they may not have to worry too much about this one.
Manchin, a two-term Democrat, received 54% support in the poll, while Raese, a former chairman of the GOP in the state, received 32%. Fourteen percent were undecided.
